Club Marshalling at Flint RNLI Bonfire Extravaganza
Members of Hawarden Rotary were invited by RNLI Flint to help marshal the crowds at their annual fireworks display in the grounds of Flint Castle. Over 3,000 people of all ages from Hawarden, Ewloe, Deeside & Holywell communities swelled the crowd. The Flint Beacon was lit, the weather was kind and everyone enjoyed the fabulous firework display. A great community event.
Lighting up Rotary International End Polio Day in Hawarden
Rotarians throughout the world, every year, on 23rd October, celebrate World Polio Day by lighting notable buildings in their locality with the colour purple to raise money in aid of the Rotary Polio Eradication Programme. A temporary purple marker is used on the little finger (‘a purple pinkie’), of every child to signify they have been vaccinated against the wild polio virus. With the exception of just two countries: Pakistan and Afghanistan, the whole world has now been certified polio free through the combined efforts of Rotary International and the World Health Organisation
Rotary in North Wales & NW England (District 1180) Conference in Liverpool
The Rotary District 1180 Conference was held on 21st October this year at the Hilton Hotel on the Historic Liverpool Waterfront. Hawarden Rotary delegates met with fellow Rotarians from across the District (photo above). During the plenary sessions, they were inspired by a full programme of inspiring presentations from experts on subjects; all relating to environmental issues.
Club Social Evening to Llandudno
On 13th October, several of our members joined together for a happy evening in Llandudno: taking the bracing sea air along the pier before supper at a newly-opened eatery in the centre of town. An enjoyable evening of convivial light-hearted stories and anecdotes and Great Rotary Friendship.
Multi-Year Rotary Project: ‘Queen’s Canopy’ Tree Planting
The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) invited everyone across the UK to plant trees to mark Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum in 2022. Hawarden Rotary took up the challenge as a multi-year project. With the help of donations, the club purchased broad-leaved tree saplings from the Woodland Trust. Rotarians and students from local schools assisted the planting on vacant land kindly donated by the Hawarden Estate. Over the coming years, further trees will be purchased and planted to develop a community resource for generations to come.
Our President 2023/24 Gareth Jones
At the end of June every year, Rotary clubs all over the world celebrate the handover of Presidential leadership to the President Elect. On 30th June, Hawarden Dee Valley members celebrated their Handover to Gareth Jones who became our president for 2023/24. We enjoyed a very special afternoon spent in Llangollen with a charming horse drawn canal boat ride. Following the Handover, members enjoyed a delicious meal together at the Cornmill Restaurant, Llangollen.
